Are vaccine-preventable illnesses covered under pet insurance?

When it comes to safeguarding your pet's health, vaccinations play a crucial role in preventing certain diseases. Vaccine-preventable illnesses are those for which effective vaccines are available, offering a shield against potential threats to your furry friend's well-being.

What are Vaccine-Preventable Illnesses?

Vaccine-preventable illnesses are diseases that can be avoided through timely and appropriate vaccinations. These vaccines stimulate the immune system, preparing it to recognize and fight specific pathogens, such as viruses or bacteria. By providing immunity, vaccines protect pets from contracting and suffering the consequences of these preventable diseases.

Vaccine-preventable illnesses for cats and dogs include but not limited to:

  1. Feline Panleukopenia (FPV): Also known as feline distemper, this highly contagious viral disease affects a cat's blood cells and gastrointestinal tract.

  2. Feline Herpesvirus (FHV): Causes upper respiratory infections and is common in multi-cat environments.

  3. Feline Calicivirus (FCV): Another common cause of respiratory infections in cats, it can lead to oral ulcers and pneumonia.

  4. Rabies: A viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can be transmitted to humans, making it a significant public health concern.

  5. Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): This virus weakens a cat's immune system, making them more susceptible to various infections and certain cancers.

  6. Rabies: A viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.

  7. Canine Distemper: A highly contagious viral infection that affects a dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

  8. Parvovirus (Parvo): A highly contagious viral illness that primarily affects a dog's gastrointestinal tract, leading to severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Rabies, Canine Distemper & Parvovirus

At Oyen, we prioritise the health and well-being of your pets. While our pet insurance coverage is extensive, it's essential to be transparent about certain exclusions. Specifically, we do not cover vaccine-preventable illnesses such as rabies, canine distemper, and parvovirus.

Why Aren't These Covered?

The decision not to cover these vaccine-preventable illnesses aligns with our commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership. Rabies, canine distemper, and parvovirus are diseases for which effective vaccines exist.
